Kinetic energy is the energy of motion that an object has. Objects moving in straight lines possess translational kinetic energy, which we often abbreviate as E k.
The translational kinetic energy of an object is given by the following:

Note the dependence of the kinetic energy on the speed of the object: kinetic energy is related to motion. The faster an object is moving the greater its kinetic energy.
